REVIEW: 2017 Dodge Charger SXT Premium AWD †Winter Warrior

Muscle cars are fun, but they aren't the kinds of cars you generally take out when the weather is bad. They're for sunny days and clear roads, but if you live where the snow flies, then you need a muscle car that's ready for winter. The 2017 Dodge Charger SXT Premium AWD is your chance to own a muscle car that's ready for snow.

The Dodge Charger is unique. It's every bit a muscle car combined with all the perks of a large sedan. There's a spacious trunk, a roomy backseat, and a responsive 3.6-liter V6 engine with 300 horsepower. And key for that winter weather, it has all-wheel drive.

We had the chance to test the Charger during a week that saw endless snow mixed with a healthy dose of ice to make the roads even worse. It's the kind of weather that makes people rethink their plans and find a way to stay inside. That made it perfect for putting the Charger to the test.

Not only did the Charger manage the snow, it did so easily. The snowbank at the end of the driveway posed zero challenge and driving through rutted residential streets beyond wasn't a problem either. Out on the highway, the Charger maintained its composure even at higher speeds.

Half the battle in the winter is keeping your cool behind the wheel and half of keeping your cool is having a car that makes you feel confident. That was our experience with the Charger. There was never a sense that we were at the edge, even as road conditions deteriorated.

Our test model was fitted with all season performance tires, so as good as it was, there was still room to improve the Charger's winter prowess with a pair of snow tires. All-wheel drive is great, but snow tires are the real key for handling snow. The nice thing is you don't need to spring for snow tires for the Charger to do its job. It's that good.

And that's really what you want in a car with all-wheel drive. Done well, it shouldn't be something you have to struggle to control. No matter how treacherous the roads grew, the Charger maintained its composure.

Pricing on the Dodge Charger SXT AWD starts at $31,995, but our tester came with all-season performance tires, the Rallye Group, a black roof, and the AWD Premium Group which added $10,000 in options. This makes for a more fully featured ride with lots of convenience and safety features, but they're not a must-have if you're looking to get a winter-ready vehicle.

The 2017 Dodge Charger SXT Premium AWD is a rare breed. Part muscle car and part sedan with all-wheel drive that makes it fun rain, shine, or snow.
