Woman jumps out of car in central Auckland

A woman is in hospital with moderate injuries after jumping out of a moving car in central Auckland after what police believe was a sexually motivated abduction.

The woman, in her mid-20s, was walking along Haslett Street in Eden Terrace about 1.50pm on Monday when a man grabbed her from behind.

He dragged her into the front passenger seat of his car and drove off.

A struggle took place and at Copeland Street the woman broke free, opened the door and jumped out.

Two members of the public saw the car leave at speed, travelling back towards Ian McKinnon Drive.

They went to the aide of the distressed woman and called police.

Detective Senior Sergeant Glenn Baldwin says the the man is described as a Maori or Pacific Islander in his 30s, of large build and around 1.84m tall.

He has tattoos on both arms and was wearing a red -and-white checked shirt over a grey T-shirt.

His car is a dark silver or grey medium-sized SUV similar to a RAV 4 or Honda CRV and it was clean inside.

There could be damage on the left side, as the door the woman opened to make her escape hit the wing mirror of a parked car.

"This is a very clear description which will mean something to somebody," Det Sen Sgt Baldwin said.

"We believe this is a sexually motivated attack and we need public help to find this man and his car."

He said he was aware the incident would be alarming to people in the Auckland area and police were doing everything possible to find the offender.

A scene examination had started and officers are going from door to door in the area and also contacting people with security cameras.
