A car has flipped on State Highway 29, on the Lower Kaimai Range.
A police spokeswoman said a call came in at 5.05 that a car had overturned and appeared to be badly damaged on the Hamilton side of the Kaimai Range.
It was unknown if anyone was still inside but emergency services were rushing to the scene.
"People are pulling over, and checking the situation out," the spokeswoman said.
A Bay of Plenty Times reader said a blue Toyota Levin was on it's roof blocking the west-bound lane on the Hamilton side of the range.
He said people had stopped to help the driver and emergency services had driven past him, on their way to the crash.
It was raining in the hills and the road was wet, he said.
