Officer Carlos Gomez, an 26-year-old officer in his second year with the department, was responding to an emergency call around 4:30 a.m. Monday when the cruiser and a Mazda 6 sedan collided at the Northwest 29th Street and Second Avenue, Miami police spokeswoman Kenia Fallat said.

The marked police car careened, front first, into a building on the southwest corner of the intersection. The Mazda, driven by 47-year-old Julio Jimenez, had an Uber sticker on the windshield.

Both drivers were taken to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Gomez's head and leg injuries put him in critical condition. Jimenez, in stable condition, suffered what might be a broken leg Miami police said.

Monday marked the second straight day that started with a police officer in critical condition after a crash.

On Sunday morning, Miami-Dade Northside District station Maj. Ricky Carter crashed while riding his personal motorcycle off-duty on Interstate 75. An emergency blood drive is being held Monday until 3 p.m. for Carter.
