Honda City accident: Car was overtaking bike, lost control and fell off flyover

The Honda City that fell off a flyover in Delhi's Punjabi Bagh on Monday morning was overtaking a bike when it lost control, police said.

According to Vijay Kumar, DCP (west), Rajat Sharma was trying to overtake a motorcycle when he lost control of his car. "The car first rammed the road divider on the right before swerving towards its left to crash through the cement railing and fall off the flyover," said Kumar, based on Malik's description of the accident.

The biker remains unknown even as the police have registered a case of causing death by negligence, rash driving and causing hurt by negligent act.

Investigators had initially suspected that the accident was triggered by a tyre burst. The tyre at the rear right end of the car was found to have been burst, prompting the initial suspicion.

Another student injured in the Honda City accident in west Delhi's Punjabi Bagh died on Tuesday during treatment. This is the fourth death in the shocking car crash.

Garima Gupta, 19, was one of the seven students going to Narela in a Honda City car to write an exam when it crashed into a divider and toppled off a flyover on Monday. Two students, Ritu Singh and Sanchit Chhabra, died on the spot and another occupant, Rajat Sharma, breathed his last later in the evening. Sharma was driving the car.

Soon after Gupta's death at AIIMS trauma centre in the early hours of Tuesday, her parents donated her eyes. Earlier on Monday, Singh and Chhabra's parents donated their eyes soon after their death.

"Two others, Rishabh Mavi and Raja Rastogi, continue to remain critical and their condition is being monitored by doctors at the AIIMS trauma centre," Vijay Kumar, DCP (west), said. On Tuesday, Rastogi underwent a brain surgery to treat his head injuries.

The seventh victim, Pranav Malik, is out of danger and is expected to survive even as he continues to remain hospitalised at BLK Hospital, said the officer. He gained consciousness on Tuesday afternoon and described the circumstances under which the accident happened.

Meanwhile, Gupta's family and friends said she had decided to travel in an overloaded Honda City car because cabs had refused to travel to her examination centre in Narela, located on the outskirts of the city. "When she was unable to book any cab, she called her friend Rajat for help. Rajat and his friends were already midway, but they decided to return to Inderpuri to pick Garima," said one of her relatives.

Gupta lived with her parents and two siblings in Inderpuri. Her father runs a utensils business in the area.
