Thirty years ago a group of Coromandel artists got together an exhibition which they held in the council rooms as there was no where else to hold it.

One of the current organisers Wailin Elliott said the idea for a Coromandel Easter Group Exhibition started on a car journey from Wellington to Auckland in 1986 when potter Jenny Shearer and herself, and wood carver Tom Elliott, were driving home to Coromandel after an exhibition in Wellington.

"The fact there was no where to hold it did not deter us," she said.

"By kind agreement with the Thames Coromandel District Council the first three exhibitions were held in the council rooms and when the old school was turned into an art gallery and theatre named Hauraki House we moved there and have exhibited every year since," she said.

The original participants were Dr Deirdre Airey, the local doctor who made terracotta tiles, potter Barry Brickell, wood carver Tom Elliott, potters Wailin Elliott, Mark Lorimer, David Shearer, Jenny Shearer, Paul Tobin and Jan White.

Wailin said four of those original artists had since passed away.

"Only Jenny, my husband Tom and myself still exhibit and we have been joined by Maureen Alison, Paul Maseyk, Mike O"Donnell and Janet Smith," she said.

The exhibition will run until Monday, April 24.
