Late-night train commuters in Wellington faced delays in the early hours of Sunday morning after a drunk driver veered off a Lower Hutt road and ploughed through a fence, with their car coming to rest upside down on railway tracks.
Police were called to the crash near Oxford Terrace, on the eastern side of Waterloo Train Station, about 11.15pm.
The car left the road, travelled 15 metres through a carpark and crashed through a wire fence, flipped, and wound up on its roof on the main Hutt Valley commuter line.
Ambulance staff treated the 21-year-old driver for minor injuries at the scene.
He was then taken to Lower Hutt Station and processed for excess breath alcohol, a police spokeswoman said.
All train services between Petone and Taita were suspended, with midnight and 1am trains between Wellington and Upper Hutt replaced by buses.
