Peugeot Instinct - Futuristic driverless hybrid car can learn your lifestyle

The Peugeot Instinct is a plug-in hybrid driverless concept car

Peugeot's Instinct concept car is powered by a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain which churns out 300bhp.

The car comes equipped with two driving modes 'Drive' and 'Autonomous' giving the driver a choice of interactivity with the car.

The modes offer various levels of comfort and responsiveness. In 'Drive' mode drivers can opt for 'Drive Boost' or 'Drive Relax' whilst in 'Autonomous' mode they have the option of 'Autonomous Soft' or 'Autonomous Sharp.'

Self-driving cars technology is already appearing in vehicles but some manufacturers are aiming for a fully autonomous car by as early as 2020.

Some motorists are against self-driving cars as it removes the fun engaging element of driving, but because the Instinct offers both, it could become popular.

New on-board tech installed into the Instinct allows it to 'learn' about the driver. The 'Internet of Things' (IoT) platform and the Samsung Artik Cloud fitted into the car, syncs with the user's devices to learn their lifestyle and preconfigure its settings.

Preferences including the driving mode, seat and interface settings, ambient lighting and audio can all be adapted to the user's routines.

This technology can then communicate with the onboard power and match the driving style to the driver's lifestyle.

For example, it can read data from a smartwatch and configure its settings to 'Autonomous Soft' mode to give the driver a relaxing ride home after a trip to the gym.

Alternatively it can check the owner's diary and the navigation system inside the car to send alerts to the drivers to set off for an appointment earlier if traffic is bad.

Its eye-catching exterior design has apparently been  created to maximise aerodynamic efficiency.

The car features suicide doors, like on a Rolls Royce but don't have a central panel to attach too, offering a completely open space with more practicality.

Peugeot says that the Instinct's exterior has been designed to increase aerodynamic efficiency. The car's overall style looks to be inspired by hot hatchbacks but the middle portion has been elongated to allow more space inside.

Cameras are installed into the LED headlights which scan the road and communicate with the driver assistance systems onboard.

Inside the 'aerospace inspired' cabin, Peugeot's i-cockpit is installed.

The i-Cockpit, which is designed to maintain driver's focus on the road, on the Instinct, can alter the feel of the cabin. When in Autonomous mode the steering wheel will fold away and the pedals retract, creating more room.

Passengers can also all communicate with the vehicle via a chatbot, a speech-driven personal assistant o, including booking cinema tickets or buying online.

Matthias Hossann, Head of Peugeot Concept cars said: "With the Peugeot Instinct Concept and its Responsive i-Cockpit, we are building on the factors that have made the brand's latest models so successful.

"We are creating new forms of driving pleasure.

"These may come from the interfaces, the architecture or the styling. There is no reason why a self-driving car should be dull to look at or to experience."

Dr. Luc Julia, Vice President of Innovation at Samsung Electronics, said: "Samsung Artik Cloud enables easy and transparent interaction between connected devices and services, freeing users from having to worry about the underlying technology.

"Together, the Peugeot Instinct concept and Samsung Artik Cloud are delivering on the vision of the connected car and making it a reality."

David Peel, Managing Director at Peugeot UK commented: "The autonomous future is happening now, and Peugeot Instinct demonstrates how this can still be driven by a passion for brilliant design and driving pleasure."

"Instinct is an uncompromised vehicle in every respect, from its elegant looks, performance and efficiency to its unique interior and intelligent technology, it is a unique proposition."

The Peugeot Instinct Concept will be on display at the Mobile World Congress Barcelona and Geneva International Motor Show.
