A meth- ddict who was out on bail when he stole a luxury car with a baby girl still strapped into the backseat has blamed his horrific crime on his own newborn baby who he claims stressed him out.

Dramatic footage released by the police on November 8, 2016, shows a woman desperately throwing herself onto the bonnet of the moving car in an attempt to stop the driver from escaping with the baby inside.

Gurkan Yildrim, 24, pleaded guilty to stealing offences when he appeared in Melbourne's County Court on Tuesday and did not apply for bail.

Yildrim's lawyer Andrew Bayliss told the court his client used ice daily and committed crimes to support his drug habit, 7 News reports.

Yildrim also blamed his own newborn child, who he claimed stressed him out and lead him to commit what has been described as an opportunistic crime.

Dramatic footage showed the 24-year-old approaching a Mercedes parked outside a primary school in Coburg, in Melbourne's north.

The CCTV footage showed Yildrim sneak into the driver's seat while the owner stood next to her car, where six-month-old Amira was asleep inside.

Yildrim locked the doors of the car and drove down the street, failing to stop when he was told there was a baby inside.

Yildrim is seen on the footage approaching the Mercedes outside the primary school before jumping in and driving off with the child still inside

The footage released by the police shows a family friend of the mother throwing herself onto the bonnet of the moving car in an attempt to stop Yildrim from driving off with baby Amira.

The woman remained on the car bonnet for 400 metres until she fell off. She was remarkably uninjured.

The mother, who was waiting to pick up her th ree primary school-aged children up from school, was then seen running down the street chasing after the car.

When Yildrim abandoned the luxury Mercedes later that day in Brunswick, an inner-city Melbourne suburb, he reportedly told a passing witness about the child still in the car.

The witness got help and the the six-month-old baby girl was returned to her mother uninjured.

'The only glimmer of remorse in this, is when he tells the witness there's a baby in the car,' Magistrate Suzanne Cameron said in court on Tuesday.

'If he didn't do that, the baby would have sat there for who knows how long.'

Yildrim pleaded guilty to stealing charges in court on Tuesday and did not apply for bail.

The 24-year-old is due to reappear in the County Court in July.
