Driver charged in wreck with police car

The driver of a car that collided with a police car in an intersection on Wednesday has been charged with failing to yield to an emergency vehicle and remains hospitalized at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

Police said Tina Lyell Spurgeon, 38, of 1520 Thresher Lane, Winston-Salem, was charged Monday morning with failing to yield for an emergency vehicle, causing injury; careless and reckless driving; failing to wear a seat belt; and failing to have liability insurance.

Officer Jacqueline Guest of the Winston-Salem Police Department was driving the marked police car east on Academy Street and responding to an emergency call about 8:51 a.m. Wednesday. The light at the intersection was red in her direction, and her car's emergency lights and siren were activated.

Investigators said Guest stopped the police car momentarily before entering the intersection, then drove forward into the intersection.

An Audi driven by Spurgeon, going north on Peters Creek, entered the intersection and collided with the police car.

Guest, who has worked for the police department for a little over four years, was taken to Forsyth Medical Center for treatment. Guest was released after treatment.

Police said Spurgeon was still receiving treatment at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for injuries that police described as non-life-threatening.

Police said they reviewed the officer's body camera video and talked to witnesses, and noted that several other vehicles on the parkway had already come to a stop at the intersection to give way to the police car.

Police said anyone with additional information could call CrimeStoppers at 336-727-2800.
