A Worcester man who works as an electrician selling fire alarm systems had to pull over on Interstate 290 Wednesday when he saw black smoke billowing from down below.
Once in a safe spot, after fire trucks and police cruisers zipped by, Michael Roescher took out his phone and captured a short video of a car bursting into flames outside the 99 Restaurant on East Central Street.
Roescher had been heading to see a customer about a fire alarm system.
"I was coming down 290 and saw this black smoke," he said in a phone interview. "I just wanted to make sure it wasn't my customer on fire."
Luckily for Roescher, it was not. Less lucky however was the 99 Restaurant employee who owns the car.
Roescher went over to the 99 after his service call to check out the scene. He said the manager there told him an employee smelled something burning in her car and parked it.
"In no more than a matter of minutes, it erupted in flames," he said.
The flames damaged the car the woman was parked next to as well, Roescher said.
