Police still trying to identify body found in the back of burning van in Asda car park

Police investigating after a body was found in the back of a burning van are still trying to identify the victim of the fire.

The body was discovered in the back the vehicle in the car park of the Asda Superstore in Reddish on Saturday morning.

The car park, off Manchester Road, was sealed off for most of the day while firefighters and police forensics investigated.

On Sunday morning a police spokesman said they were still working to identify the victim.

"The investigation is ongoing," a GMP spokesman said.

The death is understood to being treated as non-suspicious, but police insist they are keeping an open mind.

Firefighters were called to reports of smoke coming from a Fiat Scudo panel van in the Asda car park just before 9am on Saturday.

After putting out the fire the crew then discovered a body in the back of the vehicle.

A large crime scene remained in place in the car park for the majority of Saturday.

A tent was eventually erected around the van to allow police to remove the body for further forensic examination.

The Asda superstore stayed open.
