Universal just dropped a longer trailer for the next film in "The Fast and the Furious" franchise. In addition to showing more gratuitous action scenes, the 3-minute video reveals some of the plot.
We've known that Vin Diesel's character, Dominic Toretto, goes rogue in this next movie, working with Charlize Theron who plays a master hacker and cyber terrorist. What we didn't know is that her plan involves hacking "thousands of cars" to make them run amok in New York City. It's curious that FCA chose to once again partner with the F&F series considering this movie deals with mass car hacking, and just a few years ago, FCA's Uconnect infotainment system came under fire for potential security vulnerabilities. Dodge products are featured prominently in the trailers, and it's believed the upcoming 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon will make its screen debut in "Fast 8." FCA conducted a voluntary recall to address the issues in 2015, but isn't it a little soon for the company to be associating itself with hacking fears again? They even show a Chrysler 300 getting hacked at 0:47 and a Jeep Cherokee plow through a dealership at 0:52. If you recall, the hacker s that exposed the Uconnect security flaws demonstrated the attacks using a Jeep Cherokee.
The hacking scheme seems to be just one part of the bad guy's plot. There's also a submarine chase on a glacier in which Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson curls a torpedo across the ice and into a truck. It's not clear why Toretto has turned on his friends, but it's hinted that he may be under Theron's control. Another thing that's not entirely clear is the film's name. The first trailer billed it as "The Fate of the Furious" (hashtag #F8, get it?), but this trailer now calls the movie "Fast & Furious 8." IMDB lists the movie under "The Fate of the Furious aka Fast & Furious 8." Which one is the official title?
We have so many questions that we hope will be answered on April 12. Check out the latest trailer below and tell us what you think.
