Rumor has it that the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus won't feature a 3.5mm headphone jack. And new rumors keep suggesting the phone will come with a 3.5mm adapter in the box, too.

With the initial reports and rumors, the expectation was that Apple would drop the 3.5mm headphone jack, and include Lightning EarPods right in the box. That would make sense, considering that's how wired headphones would have to plug into the new iPhones, since the standard headphone jack wouldn't be available.

However, it didn't take long before rumors started to bubble to the top, supporting the idea that Apple would indeed be axing the 3.5mm headphone jack, but not including Lightning EarPods in the box. Instead, the company would be using the regular 3.5mm EarPods, like the ones that come in the boxes of iPhones now, and also a 3.5mm adapter to plug into the Lightning port.

Now, a series of images, along with a video, has been published that allegedly show off that 3.5mm adapter. The images are apparently sourced from a Foxconn factory based in Vietnam, and they were published by Tinhte.vn [translated]. As noted by the original report, the adapter is believed to be authentic.

Indeed, the adapter does look like something Apple would make, especially compared to other adapters, like Apple's Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet adapter, or the USB Type-C to USB adapter.

Interestingly enough, when the adapter is plugged into an iPhone that's running iOS 9 or older, there's a message that pops up saying there's an incompatibility issue. However, plugging in the adapter to a device that's running the iOS 10 beta doesn't show that same incompatibility message. Also interesting, if standard headphones are plugged into the headphone jack, and the adapter is connected to the Lightning port, the device will give prioritization to the Lightning adapter.

There's no telling if this is official yet, and it's certainly possible it's just another third-party attempt at creating something the Rumor Mill spit out. Still, the reports regarding 3.5mm EarPods being included in the box with an adapter are certainly starting to pick up steam.

What do you think of the idea?
