Seagate unveils 'Industry First' 2TB Nytro XM1440 M.2 PCIe NVMe Enterprise SSD.
Solid state drives have been a huge boost to performance for home computer users. Long gone are the days where your PC had to have moving parts. The sound of a slow and loud HDD seeking data is a noise I will never miss.
SSDs are not just for the home, however, as the enterprise can leverage them too. Today, Seagate unveils what it calls an "Industry First" -- a 2TB M.2 NVMe Enterprise SSD, dubbed "Nytro XM1440". This fast drive with massive capacity could be a godsend for servers.
"As the latest addition to the Seagate Nytro SSD product line, the 2TB Nytro XM1440 M.2 NVMe SSD is designed to accelerate enterprise data access, with twice the density of prior M.2 NVMe environments. Optimized for read-intensive and mixed workloads, its high capacity and small form factor are ideal for today's cloud and enterprise data center environments, where speed and processing power in a small footprint are increasingly important", says Seagate.
The storage company further says, "with active power consumption of 7 watts -- nearly half the power consumption of similar performing drives available today -- the 2TB Nytro XM1440 M.2 NVMe SSD can reach performance levels as high as 30,000 input/output operations per second (IOPS) per watt, enabling high levels of computing in the smallest power envelope. And, the drive's flexible form factor means enterprises can easily bring PCIe NVMe performance to their data centers without having to overhaul their entire infrastructure".
Obviously, not all severs can accommodate the m.2 connector -- many home users cannot use this either. If your company wants to leverage this drive and you don't have an m.2 connector, you can run it through a PCIe card adapter, which Seagate can sell you.
Keep in mind, for your company to truly take advantage of this quick SSD when using the aforementioned adapter, you will need PCIe 3.0 x4 at a minimum. Otherwise, you will experience slower speeds; albeit much faster than SATA.
If you are interested in purchasing the 2TB Nytro XM1440 M.2 PCIe NVMe Enterprise SSD you will have to wait, sadly. It will not launch until November 2016 at an undisclosed price.
