Unchain my graphics heart

Unchain my graphics heart.VERY COOL to look at and play with, the powerful ZBook Studio G3 workstation computer from HP can be carried around with you, freeing your inner graphic designer or architect from that bulky desktop station.

The polka-dot body of premium-grade material with an aluminium and die-cast magnesium chassis is a mere 18mm in width and can weigh as little as two kilograms - the weight varying according to performance-enhancing components. That's a little hefty compared to most ultrabook computers, but easily toted just the same.

The large back-lit keyboard is supremely legible. The one I tested had Thai and English characters side by side on the spill-resistant keyboard.

But most buyers of the ZBook Studio G3 will be interested in images, not letters, and the imagery comes alive on the vibrant, 15.6-inch 4K LED display with 3840x2160-pixel resolution. I found the display very sharp at 4K resolution and thus excellent for editing and pr esenting graphics and 4K video.

The model I tested - the CT0301 - was startlingly powerful thanks to an Intel Xeon E3-1505M quad-core processor running at 2.8GHz, further boosted with 32 gigabytes of DDR4 RAM (working memory) at 2133MHz. With so much RAM, the workstation can handle multiple tasks without getting slowed down. Plus, this model also has superfast Turbo Drive PCIe storage, a solid-state drive that ensures data are sent to the CPU for rapid processing and saved very fast as well.

The terrific graphics horsepower derives from a "special edition" Nvidia Quadro M1000M GPU (graphics processing unit) with 4GB of dedicated GDDR5 memory.

Add to all this fast wireless LAN connectivity using an Intel dual-band Wireless-AC 8260 802.11 AC adapter. I connected to my Linksys WRT-1200AC almost instantly, without any trouble, and had no problem browsing the Web and downloading files.

There are several ports for expanding your capabilities. There are two USB 3.0 ports on the left side and another on the r ight, next to an HDMI port for streaming 4K video to any supported large-screen TV set. Then you have a pair of Thunderbolt 3 ports (called USB-C ports) for connecting expansion devices such as fast external hard drives. On top of the great performance you get good sound quality too. The Bang & Olufsen HD audio system with integrated stereo speakers is amazing for sound-intensive high-definition movies.

For general use, the laptop does quite well. I was surfing the Net via Chrome and Internet Explorer at a quick clip and could run the complex LibreOffice 5.1.4.2 open-source suite speedily and glitch-free.

I was trying out a model fitted with the Windows 7 Professional 64-bit operating system and deployed its built-in benchmarking tool to analyse the performance. The results were impressive.

On a scale of 1.0 to 7.9 points, the Studio G3 got top marks on memory operations per second and disk-data transfer rate. It scored 7.7 on processor calculations per second, and 7.5 on desktop for Windows Aero, graphics transitional effects and 3D business and gaming graphics.

Next I used the Novabench application to double-check performance and the score was a high 1,361 points. Compare that to the latest three-month average at Novabench of 997 and media score of 844 points.

Novabench calculated the RAM speed at 16,726MB/s and the 3D frames per second at a very fast 500. The drive-writing speed was quick too - 157MB/s.

The workstation is shipped with a variety of software, including HP Performance Advisor, HP Remote Graphics Software, HP Client Security, Microsoft Security Essentials and Microsoft Defender, all of which are quite useful.

HP's ZBook Studio G3 CT0301 retails for Bt118,770 with VAT included. Bought in a store, it has Windows 10 Pro 64 edition, but that can be downgraded to Windows 7 Pro 64 if necessary.
