How to Configure Public DNS for Efficient Browsing.
In my past article on What is Public DNS? I have mentioned a thought on configuring the Public DNS, and here I am back with the article on the same. If you have missed to read on Public DNS and list of Public DNS providers with IP than I recommend you to go through it first.
There could be certain reasons to switch from ISP DNS to Public DNS like
- Experiencing Slow Web Browsing
- Fail to resolve certain website
- Access Geo-blocked websites
- Security concerns
Here, I am going to show you that how to configure Public DNS on your PC for efficient and faster web browsing. Public DNS could possible fast than your ISP DNS, but still it depends on the Geo-location of the DNS server.
How to Configure Public DNS for Efficient Browsing
This is for Windows OS (7,8,10)
To configure DNS Right-click on network icon, located in the right-bottom corner. Click on Open Network & Sharing Center.
Click on Change adapter settings from the left panel
To directly open this window, open Run by pressing window+r key combination and type ncpa.cpl and press Enter.
Right click on the adapter for which you want to change the DNS and click on Properties. Here, property window will pop up. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), because this is the guide for configuring IPv4 version. Click Properties.
Now In the next window you can see the 2 option for DNS which is Obtain DNS server address automatically and Use the following DNS server addresses. Select the second option which is Use the following DNS server addresses. Enter the public DNS IP address. Let us enter Google Public DNS address, you can get the List of Public DNS in my past article on List of Public DNS

Google DNS
Preferred: 8.8.8.8
Alternate: 8.8.4.4
Note: Using Public DNS allows DNS provider to track your browsing activities.
Configure Public DNS for Mac users
- Click on Apple menu and choose System preferences
- Click on Network icon
- Select your Ethernet or network adapter from the left panel and click on Advanced from the right panel
- Select DNS tab on the next screen. If you see existing entry than note down, in-case you need it for later use. Click on + button from bottom and add public DNS
- Click Ok
