Minix USB Type-C Adaptor Adds HDMI and Ethernet to the 12″ MacBook.
You know we're always on the lookout for ways to make that sleek (now new and slightly improved) 12″ MacBook more useful, because there's only so much you can do with a single USB Type-C port in 2016. We were pretty excited when Satechi introduced pass-through charging to their Type-C Hub, which also had a couple regular USB Type-A 3.0 ports and SD and Micro SD card readers. Now, a company a called Minix is taking the spotlight with their own Type-C hub that adds even more ports.
The allure of the Type-C port is that, in theory, it can be used for charging, data transfer, and streaming audio and video. But, not many devices are compatible with Type-C yet, and sometimes, you just need to use multiple peripherals at once. The Minix Neo C does just that. Like the Satechi hub, the Neo C has two regular USB Type-A 3.0 ports, an SD card slot, a Micro SD card slot, and a USB Type-C port for pass-through charging. On top of that, Minix has added a full-sized HDMI port and a Gigabit ethernet port, making it a perfect accessory for anyone who needs to get work done on the go and requires a stable internet connection to do it. If you need legacy support, you can buy a Neo C with a VGA port instead of HDMI.
We tested the Minix Neo C adapter and it works as described. There's one drawback however — the Neo C doesn't sit flush against the MacBook like the Satechi Type-C Hub does. But, if you're willing to make that sacrifice to score the video port and the Gigabit ethernet port, we think that's a pretty small sacrifice to make.
The Minix Neo C is available now for $90 on Amazon. It comes in gold, silver, and space grey, all matching the tones used on the 12″ MacBook. Sadly, no word on whether or not we'll see a pink (sorry, rose gold) adaptor to match the MacBook's newest color.
