'Building block' computer gets better.THE COMPACT personal computer you "build" yourself, the award-winning Revo Build from Acer, has been upgraded as the M2-601, also designated 614G5000i.

Fully customisable, it entails a CPU base unit on a one-litre chassis that's just 125x125mm square, so you can mount the Revo Build almost anywhere, plus add-on modules - the "building blocks".

The model I tested came with an external graphics box and hard drive. Other building blocks serve as speakers and microphones (the Audio Block) and even wireless chargers (the Wireless Power Bank), and more expansion blocks are on the way.

You connect blocks with pogo pins that align magnetically, making assembly as easy as a round of Lego playtime. The blocks work independently and with other PCs.

It's a simple matter of stacking everything up. The graphics block of my test model was the bottom component. The CPU unit sat on top of that, and capping the tower was a one-terabyte external hard drive, which you can take along with you when you leave home because it has USB 3.0 port to fit another computer.

With its clever design, the Revo Build has picked up a lot awards, including Choice of the Year and Best Choice Gold awards at Computex 2016. The Acer Revo Build has this year won the Red Dot Award for Product Design and iF Design Award and was among CES Innovations Awards honourees.

These are all worthy credits given the excellent way it performs. The base unit is powered by the sixth-generation Intel Core i3-6100U processor running at 2.3gH. You have 4GB of DDR4 working memory and an internal 500GB hard drive with the Windows 10SL 64-bit operating system pre-installed.

The Revo Build doesn't come with a monitor, so you use the HDMI port and Display Port to hook into your LED TV or some other monitor. I had no problem connecting it to my Sony LCD TV, where the display resolution was immediately sharp without need to make any adjustments.

You do get a wireless keyboard and mouse that worked fine during my test. There are three USB 3.0 ports in fact, for linking to other devices. The base unit also has an SD card reader so you can view digital photos on your TV.

An AMD Radeon R5 M330 GPU powers the external graphic block. For added connectivity, there's also a LAN port, built-in Wireless LAN adapter and Bluetooth 4.0 LE adapter.

I used the Revo Build to browse Web pages and watch YouTube, high-definition movies and IPTV on my TV set and was impressed with everything I saw.

The Revo Build M2-601 retails for Bt25,900.
