Argos recalls thousands of chargers for tablets amid fears they could cause electric shocks.

High street giant Argos is recalling thousands of chargers for its budget Alba tablets amid fears they could cause electric shock.

The online and catalogue king has been emailing customers who snapped up three different screen sizes warning them about potentially dangerous plugs.

Tablets affected by faulty plugs which can fall apart and expose wires when plugged into mains sockets are the 8GB seven and eight inch tablets and the 16GB ten inch versions bought between July last year and this month.

Worryingly the faulty plug fiasco comes just two weeks after online store Amazon issued urgent notices to millions of parents following a similar safety alert over chargers for its kids' Fire tablets.

Amazon is urging owners of the popular Fire Kids Edition seven inch tablets bought since September 2015 to dump the chargers, amid safety fears.

And it said its best selling Kindle Fire tablets sold from the same period were also at risk and called on all UK users to scrap the power cables.

In an urgent email sent to millions of British and Irish customers Amazon said: "We have determined that, in rare cases, when the power adapter included with the UK Fire 7" and UK Fire Kids Edition 7" tablet is pulled from the wall socket, the adapter assembly may detach and create a risk of electrical shock."

Amazon Fire HD Kids Edition has also been recalled amid electric shock fears

It is offering free replacements and said: "Customer safety is our top priority. We encourage customers to exchange their original power adapters."

Anxious parents and Kindle Fire owners are being urged to check charger plugs with the model number FABK7B and contact the e-tailer's customer services at amazon.co.uk/contactus for advice and power cable replacements.

An Amazon spokesperson said: "This issue affects power adapters, not tablets. We wanted to proactively reach out to customers out of an abundance of caution."
