Apple said to plan retirement of Thunderbolt display.
In a statement given to TechCrunch, an Apple spokesperson said, "We're discontinuing the Apple Thunderbolt Display". The monitor, which is the only one Apple sells and has traditionally been slow on the updates, is still available to purchase through Apple's website, as well as Apple Stores and authorized retail stores for however long the existing supplies last. It will be available through Apple.com, Apple's retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers while supplies last. Although it's still available in the Apple store (for the not super low price of $999), once current inventory is sold out, that'll be the end of Apple producing standalone displays for its computers.
With a resolution of 2560x1440ppi, the Thunderbolt Display was one of the most coveted displays of its time.
Earlier this month, rumors indicated that Apple could be working on a 5K display (the same resolution as the iMac), but with a built-in GPU to help drive those graphics. Those rumors were later refuted - and we didn't see any new hardware at WWDC.
There was no hint on whether Apple planned to replace it with another monitor offering. If that's the case, Mac users will be forced to live with the stylings of HP, Dell, and Samsung for their external display needs. Current Thunderbolt tech may (or may not, depending on who you ask) work for it if you run cables in parallel, or customize it using a wireless chip method similar to Apple's Lightning digital AV Adapter.
